Description
Yanley Lane Viaduct carries the A370 Long Ashton Bypass over Yanley Lane and the main Bristol to Taunton railway line, at NGR 354943 170066.

The viaduct, which was constructed in 1968, is a 12-span composite (Reinforced concrete deck with Steel cross sectional deck beams) structure, with 11 spans of 24.38 metres and one span of 30.48 metres, with a width of 13.10 metres. There are 8No. longitudinal girders per span which are spliced into transverse plate girders at each end. The transverse plate girders span between the bearings on the piers and abutments.

Each transverse girder was placed side by side to span reinforced concrete bridge decks on either side and to create bridge movement joints on top.

The gap between the transverse girder were filled with low strength mass concrete. Due to the age of the mass concrete, broken pieces of this low strength concrete falling on to the ground and creating a risk of falling on to pedestrian’s/vehicular traffic underneath and animals in the field.

Due to this danger, North Somerset Council’s structural team proposing to apply some remedial/safety measure to contain any loose concrete within the steel transverse beams by fixing a galvanized steel mesh to underside of these transverse beams bottom flanges with an appropriate screw or bolt fixings.
