Project description/overview
Barrow Maritime Streets. Barrow-in-Furness
Public realm improvements project. Hard and Soft Landscape
Proposed Project Start Date: Oct 2016

The focus of this project is to enhance the estate. In particular the central square, the two garden areas and entrances. The landscape central courtyard seeks to create a number of unique spaces, each one connected via a series of paths and shared surfaces. They are designed in response to the site context, the existing historic settings and the new and existing buildings. The overall aim is to create an environment where the whole public realm is safe, accessible, and welcoming for everyone, residents and visitors alike. The open space strategy includes the introduction of a hierarchy of public and semi-private open spaces, all of which will be multifunctional, sensory and accessible. The Barrow Maritime Streets includes a large central square, two maritime gardens and improvements to the immediate entrance area of the estate. The area will have a distinct identity as we propose using a unified design type for all hard and soft landscape elements featuring paving, planting, lawns, play area(natural play), growing areas, and shared surfaces.
