South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) have five existing transport interchange sites across South Yorkshire. At each site, users can communicate between handheld radios and between handheld radios and a desk based mobile radio located at a control desk. This is achieved via a repeater (Channel 1) and/or using direct
mode (Channel 2). Communications between interchange sites is currently not possible.
The current coverage area of the PMR system at each site, i.e., the distance over which a handheld radio can communicate with another handheld or the desktop mobile radio and vice versa, is understood to be in the order of 1-2 kilometres, however, this range appeared to vary depending on whether handheld radios were inside or outside a building.

Each Interchange currently operates independently of the others. A control desk at each interchange currently acts as the comms management hub for their local staff. SYMCA would like to continue to operate each site independently but allow communications between each site, if required. In addition, SYMCA would like the PMR System at every site to be manageable 24/7 from the comms desk at any of the interchanges or remotely, if
required.

To this end, SYMCA are looking to upgrade their current PMR systems to support and align with the above, have better features, improve communications between staff at each site, and facilitate communication between their five existing sites across South Yorkshire.
