Description
Herefordshire Council unanimously declared a climate emergency in March 2019, and has ambitions plans in place to become a zero carbon Council by 2030.
But the Council’s own emissions are only approx. 1% of the emissions of the County as a whole. We’re therefore working together with a whole range of partners and stakeholders to develop a ‘Countdown to 2030’ Action Plan on Climate and Ecology for the whole County of Herefordshire, with the aim of publishing this in December 2020.
One part of this work is our 2020 Climate Challenge Team initiative, which we launched on 9th March 2020. The initiative aims to:
• Engage new people in addressing the climate crisis at both personal and systemic level
• Generate public interest in and support for the journey to zero carbon, through creating engaging content for social and traditional media
• Develop deeper understanding of the opportunities and constraints to climate action in key sectors in Herefordshire.
We have recruited 25 volunteers, young and old, from a wide range of backgrounds (health, education, construction, farming etc) (not just ‘the usual suspects’), and will be asking them to do two things:
1. Reduce their own personal carbon footprint by 20% in the coming year, and share the ups and downs of their journey with others through both social and traditional media;
2. Work in small groups to recommend what could and should be done in all the different sectors of our economy and society to help make Herefordshire a zero carbon county.
The aim of this contract is to appoint one or more individuals to provide enthusiastic, committed, tailored support to the Team to enable them to achieve the intended outcomes of the project:
1. Reduction in team members’ carbon footprints (target -20% over one year)
2. Significant growth in a) coverage and b) public engagement with zero carbon messaging via social and traditional media in Herefordshire
3. Articulation of recommendations for measures to reduce carbon across all sectors in Herefordshire (and possibly implementation of some pilot activities)
The project will run from 1 July 2020 – 31st December 2020. A possible extension of 6 months may be considered.
