The vision for the Tunbridge Wells Cultural & Learning Hub, ‘The Amelia’, is to bring together under one roof the museum and Art Gallery, the Library, Adult Education, Tourist Information and TWBC Gateway Services so that they can work seamlessly together. All but one of them (Adult Education) will in the future be delivered under one staffing structure. In architectural terms this means connecting several existing buildings at the corner of Mount Pleasant Road and Crescent Road, including Tomas and Prestwich’s Library, Museum and Art Gallery, and the original Tunbridge Wells Technical College from the 1890’s. There will be one major entrance off Mount Please Road. The majority of the existing building will be retained but adapted, with additional links created, so that they can function as one building. The buildings will be grouped around a central courtyard, which will be a curated space that is used in the summer months for performance and displays. Enriching Lives, Inspiring Learning will be at the heart of The Amelia. New juxtapositions and blends of services will cast a new light on existing artefact and book collections and draw visitors naturally from one to another. Adult Learning will have a natural partnership with the museum’s collections. Visitors who have come to the museum for tourist information will be encouraged to linger and learn more about the town’s history. In these and numerous other ways the Hub will create a seamless blend of what were previously separate and disconnected council services and in so doing give visitors new insights and richer experiences. There will be a new Temporary Exhibition space, with up to date facilities, enabling Tunbridge Wells to host exhibitions to national standards, and thus build on the town’s reputation as a centre for arts and culture. There will also be retail and catering facilities. All the museum’s artefacts will be brought together in a single storage location in the Hub’s new lower ground floor, along with a Learning Suite, for schools and others. The lower ground floor will be reached from the ground floor by stairs and by lift.
