Opportunity Id

Title
Development of Needs Based Training
Categories
80500000-9 - Training services
Description
The aim of the project is to develop a training framework for frontline staff providing services for people with learning disabilities, autism or both in the four key areas of comorbidity in learning disability (ASD, Mental Health, behaviour problems and physical health). All staff will need to have a minimum standard of training in all four domains. It is then necessary to match training to the skills required by the typical patient group of the team the staff work in. The skills set will be drawn from existing knowledge and skills frameworks, including the Generic Service Interventions Pathway, the Learning Disabilities Core Skills Education and Training Framework, the Forensic Workforce Competency Framework (to be launched in January 2019) and the Autism Competency Framework.

Specification:
Aim:
• To agree the skills, competencies and knowledge required by front line staff who support people with learning disabilities, autism or both and their families by drawing material from existing frameworks. Staff will be encouraged to obtain some of this development by practice-based learning to avoid having to be pulled away from the work environment
• In addition to knowledge and skills regarding learning disabilities, staff will be provided with learning on the four common comorbidities (ASD, Mental Health, behaviour problems and physical health) up to a level depending on the profile of the person or group of people determined by an assessment using the Learning Disability Needs Assessment Tool (LDNAT). This assessment provides the priorities for training for staff teams.

Objective:
• To develop a training tool which allows leaders of teams providing support to people with learning disabilities, autism or both or ward-based teams to determine the needs profile of their patients and specify the training needs of their frontline staff so that there is congruity between the needs profile and the skills profile
• To develop a range of approaches which enhance learning in the workplace without undue reliance on e-learning or classroom-based learning

Approach:
Review:
• Training Needs Analysis Report: Method and results of an analysis of learning disability clustering data
• Current skills and competency frameworks

Map:
• Workforce skills requirements to needs of the six groups, as identified in Training Needs Analysis Report: Method and results of an analysis of learning disability clustering data

Develop:
• A flexible training package for each of the six groups, to be used by home and ward managers to enable staff to deliver truly person-centred care.
