Enhancing Trinity Square, Sutton Town Centre
Main contract details
Enhancing Trinity Square, Sutton Town Centre.
Sutton Town Centre is one of only four metropolitan centres within south London and offers a high level of attractive and accessible shopping, employment and leisure activities. Whilst exhibiting many strengths, including its pedestrianised character and high architectural quality, Sutton Town Centre faces a number of challenges which could undermine its long term success.
Following endorsement by the Council’s Housing, Economy and Business Committee in March 2015, the Council commissioned consultants in August 2015 to prepare a masterplan for Sutton Town Centre. The main purpose of the masterplan commission was to develop an ambitious and deliverable vision for Sutton Town Centre. The masterplanning team has subsequently developed an exciting vision that will direct future investment, growth and development in the town centre to 2031, and ultimately strengthen its Metropolitan Centre designation (see Appendix A).
The masterplan includes a wide array of recommendations and projects to realise the 2031 vision, including new developments, public realm improvements and transport proposals – all set within the context of seven strategic projects. This includes a range of immediate high street projects to increase activity and enhance the image of Sutton Town Centre.
A key objective of the masterplan is to improve Sutton Town Centre’s cultural, leisure and entertainment offer. Whilst a range of arts, culture and entertainment activities, pavement cafes and a vibrant evening economy all contribute towards a lively and successful town centre, Trinity Square – a large outdoor performance stage located at the heart of Sutton High Street – has been identified as an area for enhancement to maximise the opportunities for realising the town centre vision.
The London Borough of Sutton is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified organisation to design an enhanced Trinity Square scheme.
The contract will be for a period of 7 months commencing at the end of September.
