Contract: AVON BEACH PROMENADE ENHANCEMENT SCHEME

Details

Buyer:
Christchurch and East Dorset Council
Department:
Property and Engineering
Title:
AVON BEACH PROMENADE ENHANCEMENT SCHEME
Description:
A full Specification of the requirement is set out in client Appendix A – Specification. Please read the Contract and Specification and other tender documents thoroughly as they are documents against which your responses will be evaluated. The proposed solution is to raise and widen a 250m long section of promenade, bringing it in line with other parts of the promenade and improving the coastal defences to protect against predicted sea level rise. The innovative design incorporates the use of free-standing interlocking precast concrete barriers measuring 3.0m x 0.8m x 0.45m as the new retaining wall. Bolted to the top of the retaining wall are to be recycled hardwood timber planks or polymer composite planking with solar powered low level LED lighting inset into the planking. The existing tarmacadam surfacing is to be excavated and removed together with any unsuitable sub-base material see Appendix B Slide 1. 40mm nominal sized clean aggregate will provide the bulk-fill material up to footway construction which will dovetail in with the existing at either end. The footway surfacing construction will consist of a well compated 150mm thick layer of Type 2 limestone aggregate with between 60-100mm thick layer of tarmacadam binder/base course, topped off with between 16-30mm thick 6mm nominal size coloured alsphalt or resin bound aggregate. Tenderers must provide rates for both types of surface finish. See Appendix B Schematic Cross Section drawing. Upon completion of the promenade enhancement works the beach infront of the new structure will be re-profiled to the height of the edging planks. The new structure will also allow for two seating areas which protrude out in to the beach. See Drg CBC2016/01/001. To the rear of the beach huts is a low level wall which forms an integral part of the flood and coast protection structure. This is to be raised by between 500-600mm. The Council's Tenant of the Avon Beach facilities owns the 100 or so timber beach huts and will be responsible for temporarily removing and storing of them. Once the tarmacadam binder/base course has been laid then the Tenant will be allowed to return the said beach huts having given the Contractor adequate notice to undertake such operations. Beach huts may not be returned until the Contractor is satisfied with the placement of tarmacadam binder/base course.
