The Covid-19 pandemic has cost over 100,000 lives so far in the UK. The virus and the response to it have exacerbated health and social inequalities and highlighted the huge variations in how easily we are able to weather threats to livelihoods, educational progress, and to physical and mental health.
National and local government objectives in tackling covid and its effects therefore include:
1. Suppress the virus in Cornwall and ensure the NHS can cope
2. Protect the most vulnerable in our society from the effects of Covid and the response to Covid
3. Support recovery from Covid
4. Address the inequalities exacerbated by Covid through a system-wide response
As part of achieving these objectives, Cornwall Council has agreed in principle the use of a funds to “enable additional mobilisation of VCSE to support COVID response, and strengthen infrastructure organisations and community groups through both response and recovery phases.”
A proposal has been made as to how these funds should be spent. This proposal included an organisational capacity building post in Cornwall Rural Community Charity.
Purpose of the role
- Support the response to Covid-19 by:
o Gather intelligence from small VCSE organisations on attitudes to vaccines and what people need in order to access the vaccine.
o Helping small VCSE organisations increase uptake of the Covid vaccines and encourage testing and isolation for those that need to
- Support small organisations to access funds in order that they can work to improve the health and wellbeing of those individuals and groups most affected by Covid-19
- Connect small organisations to other larger VCSE organisations to enhance each other in supporting those most affected by Covid.
- Increasing the understanding of the local authority and others in the VCSE sector of how we can work better together to meet the needs of the population.
