Contract: Parenting Support - Learning Disability

Details

Buyer:
Cornwall Council
Department:
Public Health
Title:
Parenting Support - Learning Disability
Description:
To improve outcomes for families with pre-school children (0-5), where parents have learning disabilities (LD) by offering specialist group and 1:1 support to equip parents with the skills, confidence and support networks they need to meet their children’s safety, health and development needs. We will do this by providing short term 1:1 support at home and ongoing group support. 1:1 at home visits will offer immediate support around family need for creating connections to their community. This may take the form of connection to support for immediate needs, e.g. housing advice, access to healthcare, or parenting support but will be different for every parent and will still be aimed at meeting the outcomes below. Group sessions focus on key life skills, promoting positive mental health, developing knowledge of healthy habits for both parents and children; promoting positive relationships; with guest sessions covering topics such as recognising and avoiding scams, and recognising abuse and forming healthy relationships. The topics will be developed in response to parental need but will always contain topics from the healthy under 5s framework. This may be achieved by directly sharing information, inviting in guest speakers and sharing strategies amongst the group. Examples of this could include inviting Brighter Smiles or Healthy Cornwall into the group, having a session on potty training or sharing external links to information on weaning and nutrition.
